Steve Scherer Understanding Boat Design
Does this boat track well? Will it turn easily? Is this boat stable? Is it easy to “roll”? A basic understanding of the physical properties of a vessel enables a paddler to fully utilize all of the design aspects that their boat possesses. Come learn how each of these design characteristics affect performance. Whether you are shopping for your first boat or your 10th this presentation will open your eyes to what a boat can do! We will discuss all of the boat styles from whitewater to touring, canoes, sit-on-tops, etc. and how the environment (wind, waves and current) affect boat movement through the water. A person’s physical size and condition, the boat’s intended uses, load and capacity and many other aspects will affect performance and must be taken into consideration. Boats are generally designed for a specific use and body type and when we fall outside this paradigm we need to understand the consequence. - Friday 7 pm; Saturday 11:30 am; Sunday 1 pm. Marcus Demuth Falkland Islands Circumnavigation: Expedition 2009
The Falkland Islands are an archipelago full of wildlife in the South Atlantic Ocean located 300 miles east of Cape Horn, and 584 miles north of Antarctica. Previous attempts to circumnavigate this windy and sparsely inhabited Archipelago by kayak were unsuccessful, with some even suffering casualties due to the many challenges which await the paddler in this remote part of the earth. The local shipping company in the Falklands initially refused to ship Marcus' kayak to the Falklands, describing his plans to circumnavigate the Falklands in a kayak as "suicidal and plain stupid." One year later, with the help of the British Ministry of Defense, a kayak was finally shipped from Great Britain to the Falklands, helping to realize Marcus' dream of circumnavigating the Falkland Islands in January of 2009. - Saturday 1:30 pm; Sunday 1 pm. See schedule for Saturday or Sunday
About Marcus Demuth: In 2009 Marcus Demuth became the first kayaker to successfully circumnavigate the Falkland Islands, a grueling trip of over 680 Miles in 22 days. The challenges he faced while circumnavigating the Falklands included constant high winds in almost gale force strength, paddling in darkness to avoid the strongest winds during the day, high swell, and avoiding beaches containing land mines left from the Falklands War in the 80's. In 2007 Marcus circumnavigated Ireland as a fundraiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Association, a trip of over 1,100 Miles in 42 days. Past expeditions brought Marcus to Iceland (2008), the South and West Coast of Australia (2007), and Patagonia/Chile (2006). Joe Glickman says in Adventure Kayak Magazine (1/2009) about Marcus: "This expedition paddler is the real deal”. Read about Marcus' kayak adventures, paddling tips, and more at: www.marcusdemuth.com

About Danny Mongno: “Werner Paddles has given me the opportunity to do what I love for a living and a day does not go by that I am not thankful. It’s just amazing to me that every time I pick up any kind of paddle, climb aboard any craft I still have that same stoke in my heart and soul that I did when I was 16. I have certainly worked hard over the years to establish myself as an instructor and continued to perfect my own paddling skills along the way, but I think what makes me successful is I am really just like the people I work with. We’re all just out there to have a good time. I mean I have never lived out of my kayak for more than 2 days, I have never ran a water fall bigger than 40 feet and I am just not out there looking for that adrenaline rush. I love being on a flat calm lake or class 2 white water as much as I enjoy the big stuff.” Werner truly provides Danny with more of a lifestyle than a career. He is 36 years old paddles most every day and spends 8 months a year living in the Werner rig and 4 months as his home in Asheville, NC. Keep an eye out for him when he swings through your town on the running trail, white water take out, lake, local surf spot or any where else the paddlers gather. Bar stools not excluded.
